NB: Thank you so much to everyone who passed along the information and resources included here

My experiences learning to read in Taiwanese, starting from a point of limited literacy in Han characters: https://ampleroad.substack.com/p/reading-or-something-like-it-guest

Screen readers/romanization & character converters/audio technologies

1. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/inkah-pop-up-dictionary/pcgmedbmchghfgikplcimdmfldfnecec/related?hl=en (Inkah is a screen reader - similar to Pleco - for deciphering Mandarin characters on your browser)

2. https://suisiann.ithuan.tw/ (This tool will translate romanized Taiwanese into 漢字台文 (or vice versa) and produce an audio file so you can hear the text. It is sometimes buggy. Taking out Arabic numerals helps.)

3. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/t%C3%A2i-g%C3%AD-helper/pdpbfanllabhbledlnemlnmchfeheljp?hl=en (Tâi-gí Helper Chrome and Firefox extension allows you to highlight and right click any Taiwanese text (romanized or in characters) and then choose from a menu of dictionaries to look up the definition and/or pronunciation. The dictionary will pop up in a separate tab)

4. https://buttaiwan.github.io/taigivs/ (This tool adds Taiwanese romanization to characters; there is a built-in dictionary function, just click on the words and the definitions appear in a window on the right; it also tries to guess at the correct pronunciation for the characters that may change sound depending on context or placement in the sentence)

POJ and Taiwanese character keyboards

3. FHL - Faith, Hope, Love

Universities outside of Taiwan that offer Taiwanese Courses

United States

1. Stanford University:

1. Beginning Southern Min (Taiwanese) Conversation (CHINLANG 10, 11, & 12): https://explorecourses.stanford.edu (enter “Taiwanese” as the search term). This class is taught by a great lecturer in the Chinese Language department. She’s very kind! Our class had a range of students - Singaporean Hokkien speakers; white Americans; 1.5 generation Taiwanese who had grown up unable to communicate with their Taiwanese-speaking grandparents; me (conversationally fluent in Taiwanese but back then fairly illiterate in characters).

2. University of California, Berkeley:

1. Taiwanese Language (also Ethnic Studies 198), run by Taiwanese students as part of the DeCal (Democratic Cal) program: https://decal.berkeley.edu/courses/4137?fbclid=IwAR11feggamyA2uZwYm_3woFsR-10m0moNl5JlLdfUp2wFzf9CcR7uWuPprU

2. Contact info: [email protected]

3. University of Pennsylvania:
